Software

Overview

The ICT project uses the following major software tools:

  • Web toolkit to create and run the Web portal and to manage and present all project documents and lectures.
  • Chemical server providing chemical information to clients.
  • Chemical client to view chemical data provided by the server.

Web toolkit

The web toolkit is an accessible multilingual content management system. It allows to manage a web site and its content documents using a web browser, in a portable way accessible to visually impaired users. It conforms to W3C content and accessibility standards and provides authoring means easy to use by visually impaired users.

Additional information about the web toolkit can be found on its separate project page.

Chemical server

The chemical server is the source of chemical information to be used in the client user interface. It provides centralized knowledge base to the chemical client that renders it to the user. While the client serves basically as a display software, the server is the smart part of the system that tells the client everything it needs to know to display the information correctly.

Additional information about the chemical server can be found on its separate project page.

Chemical client

This is a tool for presenting chemical information in an accessible way to visually impaired users. It connects to the server to retrieve chemical information and renders it on the client to the user. The important part of this process is to make the information, traditionally presented in a visual way, accessible and easily readable and manageable in a textual way within an accessible user interface.

The client can be run in the Firefox web browser as its extension. You can download and install it directly from Firefox by clicking on this link pointing to the extension module.

Additional information about the chemical client can be found on its separate project page.
